Grit in the Classroom
Grit is the result of passion and perseverance. It can be fostered in students by establishing a culture of academic risk-taking alongside a deep understanding of one's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Creating this culture is difficult and messy, requiring buy-in from all staff, students, and families. It begins with a shared understanding of what it means to be gritty, why grit is important in today's students, and how we can cultivate grit in all students of all abilities from all backgrounds.
Grit and the Gifted Student
Creating a learning environment that fosters grit development should be a significant focus for educators. In an era of talent development and the pursuit of excellence, we must equip our gifted learners with the perseverance that is essential to reaching high levels of success. Discover practical ideas for creating a school culture designed to build passion and perseverance.
Blended learning is a learning model that is gaining in popularity among K-12 schools. It differs from a traditional learning environment in that the teacher/facilitator designs learning experiences that purposefully combine face-to-face and online instruction. Beyond all of this, blended learning requires a shift in control; the teacher guides students down an educational path, allowing them to personalize their learning. Because of this power and the flexibility in depth and pacing, this model is very effective with gifted learners. As with any shift in education, though, we must maintain high standards, use technology as one tool to achieve learning goals, ask challenging questions, and provide opportunities to develop creative problem solving skills. All in 50 minutes a day.
